James
R. McCathren
Jim is a Registered Architect, Registered Interior Designer, and
a member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
Mr. McCathren graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M with an Environmental
Design degree and received the Master of Architecture degree from
the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is a member of Mensa and
Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society in Architecture and Allied Arts. He
received a Navy Science Award and Army Award for Outstanding Research
and Development.
Mr. McCathren
is past chairman of the Uniform Building Code Review Committee and
was chairman of the Citizen's Review Committee for Storm-water Management.
He was selected to serve on the Mayor's Task Force on Community
Needs and served for ten years on the Board of Building Standards.
He is former Treasurer of the Abilene Chapter of the American Institute
of Architects. Mr. McCathren is a former member of the Abilene Preservation
League and is a former Cubmaster and Support Services Chairman of
the Chisolm Trail Council of the Boy Scouts. He judges the Senior
High Physical Science division of the Science Fair. After graduating
from Leadership Abilene, he served on the LA Steering Committee
dealing with quality of life issues. He served on the Leadership
Abilene Alumni Association Board and the Abilene Philharmonic Board.
An avid sailboat racing enthusiast, McCathren has victories to his
credit in centerboard, multihull, and offshore classes.
Mr. McCathren held a research position with the Georgia Institute
of Techology for contracts with the U.S. Department of Energy dealing
with thermal load reduction and passive cooling. He did pioneering
work with geothermal systems and radiant cooling to the night sky.
He lectured to international audiences on cooling strategies and
presented work at the 1982 World's Fair. Mr. McCathren authored
"Passive Cooling to the Night Sky", Proceedings - Seventh National
Passive Solar Conference, 1982, and "LODAN: An Energy Load Analysis
and Simulation Program", 1981. He contributed to "Teaching Passive
Design in Architecture", US DoE, 1982. This work won the Progressive
Architecture Citation for Applied Research.
