Illusions occur when our eyes send visual patterns to our brains that do not correlate with existing images. We think we see things that aren't really there and we can trick ourselves into believing impossible relationships. If you have another favorite, e-mail it to us for inclusion.

One example is left-brain right-brain conflicts. look at the chart below and say the COLOR, not the word.

The right brain tries to say the color but the left brain insists on reading the word.

Count the Black Dots

How many legs does the elephant have?

Are the lines straight and parallel?

How many triangles? Answer at the bottom of the page

In the top figure to the left, a triangle is composed of 4 separate shapes.

In the bottom figure, the exact same 4 shapes are rearragned to form the same triangle but there is now a missing square near the middle of the bottom side! How can identical shapes be rearranged to yield less area?

How many triangles? none. Your brain filled in the missing line segments to make triangles where none exist - just pairs of lines and circles with a piece cut out.
